"Off site" file backup

Many writers fail to consider what might happen to their work in the event of a fire.  A fire at your premises could damage your computer hard disc and could also destroy your backup media resulting in the loss of your files and scripts.  A burglary in which the thief takes your PC and also pockets your box of discs or external hard drive/pen drive could rob you of a lifetime's work.  Additional dangers that have cost writers dearly in the past include flood and water damage, sunlight and condensation damage to backup discs, and of course the constant threat of computer viruses which could easily.

The Script Vault offers an inexpensive File Backup service which costs less than £1 per week (fee fully tax deductible to eligible taxpayers), which means that if your files are stolen or destroyed, you can instantly recover backups from the safety of The Script Vault.

When you first subscribe we'll ask you to send us by e-mail or disc the files you want us to store, after you've done that all you have to do is send us any new files by email - it's that simple!

FAQ's

Is it possible to pay the File Backup Subscription fee by cheque or postal order instead of Paypal?
Yes of course. Please send your payment to FILE BACKUP SERVICE, THE SCRIPT VAULT, P O BOX 36, TODMORDEN, OL14 7WZ, don't forget to include your details and an email address.

Surely the chances of a fire are very remote?
Take a look at the array of cables trailing from your computer and snaking their way to your electrical sockets.  Do you use double adaptors?  Triple adaptors?  Extension cables?  Isn't it possible that excluding your kitchen, a room with as much electrical equipment as your computer workroom is the most likely place for a fire to start?  But let's not be too alarmist.  After all, some people go through their whole life and never experience the horror of a fire.  But if you are unlucky enough to have a house or office fire, this 'once in a lifetime experience' may well send a lifetime's work up in smoke.

I have very good insurance, surely I'm covered?
Your insurance policy will cover the replacement cost of your computer equipment, but will generally not offer any compensation for your destroyed scripts.  And as for those precious backup floppy discs… the insurers will compensate you at the rate of approximately 50p per disc.  Not much compensation if one of them contains a month's work or a possible Hollywood blockbuster!

I have a very secure filing cabinet, surely that would protect my floppy discs from fire?
Almost certainly not.  Even fireproof filing cabinets and safes can't protect discs.  A fireproof filing cabinet may stop paper from burning, but as soon as the inside temperature of the cabinet reaches 52°, a disc will begin to melt and data will be destroyed.  Only safes designated 'data safes' can offer greater levels of protection.

Couldn't I just send scripts on a floppy disc to a friend?
Good idea, but you'd need to do this on a regular basis and be confident that the discs would be stored away from direct sunlight, heat, damp, condensation and also ensure that small children and pets cannot get to the disks and damage them.  However by the time you've paid for the cost of discs and postage you might be better off paying £2.50 per month and storing your files in The Script Vault.

What if I've been working on new drafts of scripts I've already sent you?
If you want to keep the old drafts then give the file a new name e.g. 'Film Draft 2'.  If you send a file with the same name as one already in storage, the new file will replace the old one.

Could I use The Script Vault as my only backup and not bother with discs/pen drives/external drives?
The Script Vault should not replace your usual backup method.  It is designed to be an emergency 'off site' backup only and shouldn't be used as the sole backup location.
